. We first learned of this particular movie from the beloved animation studio in December 2018. At the time, not much was revealed and for the last six months or so the project has remained largely mysterious. We now have our first truly good look at the upcoming fantasy tale, which reunites Avengers: Endgame stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as a couple of elf brothers in a unique world full of mythical creatures.• have revealed the first teaser trailer for
In true Disney• fashion, this first trailer is truly just a teaser that helps to set up the world we're going to explore. It lays out the foundation that creatures such as Elves, gnomes and other such fictional fantasy favorites now inhabit the Earth and live very normal lives. Unicorns are pests who eat out of garbage cans and people have pet dragons. It's all sort of silly, charming and funny. We then get to the heart of the matter, which sees Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as two elf brothers who, though very different, are quite close. They both get in Pratt's rocker/hippie van with a pegasus painted on the side of it, heading off on some adventure To top it all off, it's set to the tune of Magic by The Cars.
For now, we don't get much of a sense of the greater story that will be at play. According to Disney, Onward will center on two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest in a van named Guinevere to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. What we do get a feel for is the excellent chemistry between Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, who have worked together as Spider-Man and Star-Lord respectively in the last two Avengers movies. Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus also stars as the voice of their mom.
Dan Scanlon is on board to direct, with Kori Rae producing. This is the same team that previously brought Monsters University to life in 2013. That worked out quite well, as the prequel grossed a very impressive $744 million worldwide. Pixar tends to try and keep the same talent around when good relationships form. The difference here is that they're working on an original concept, as opposed to continuing a previous story.
For the past couple of years, the highly successful animation studio has been focused on sequels, with Incredibles 2 last year andcoming down the pipeline this summer. That worked out well, as the former grossed $1.2 billion at the box office and the latter is on track for a record-breaking box office debut. But it was recently made clear that they will be shifting focus to originals for the next few years, starting with Onward, which is currently set to hit theaters on March 6, 2020.
